Who needs a test
In Salt Lake County, most gas vehicles model year 1968 and newer need an emissions test every two years if they are less than six years old, and every year after that. Your registration renewal notice tells you if one is due.
The three ways to fail
- Check engine light on. Automatic fail. Get the free scan and fix the cause first.
- Monitors not ready. If the battery was disconnected or codes were cleared recently, the computer hasn't finished its self-tests. The test can't pass.
- Actual emissions problem. Catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, EVAP leaks, misfires.
The drive cycle
To set the monitors: cold start, idle 2–3 minutes, drive at a steady 45–55 mph for 10 minutes, then mixed city driving for 10 minutes. Some cars need two or three cycles over a few days. Don't disconnect the battery before your test.
